TEM sample preparation for hard materials (by ion milling)
For TEM studies on heterogeneous bulk materials, ion milling is an effective preparation technique. The Ion Milling System is equipped with two ionic milling guns, which generate inert (Ar) ionic or atomic beams under high voltage (1-6 KeV usually) to thin the specimens (3mm in diameter) from both sides until perforation. The tilt angle of the guns varies from 0° to 90°. The sample stage is water cooled during the milling procedure. TEM samples are milled for several hours depending on the material type and thickness. This course will teach how to use the ion milling system, as well as the conventional grinding and pre-thinning sample using a dimpler device.
